Encrypt an Email using Desktop Outlook

Instructions (For Outlook Classic)

To encrypt an email, first start by creating a new email and filling it out. Then, at the top of the email, click on “Options”. In this menu, you will see an “Encrypt” Button.

When you click on the “Encrypt” button, you will see a notice appear above the email, stating “Encrypted – Permission granted by: (your email address)”.

Your email is now encrypted and ready to send.
 

How to Set View and Modification Restrictions on Emails

If you click on the drop-down menu below the “Encrypt” button, you will see there are additional options.

If you want to set restrictions on what the receiver can do with your email, as well as encrypt it, you can use these options:

  • “CECIL COLLEGE - Confidential” will encrypt the message and will allow modification but not printing or copying
  • “CECIL COLLEGE - Confidential View Only” will not allow modification, copying or printing.
  • “CECIL COLLEGE – Do Not Forward” stops the recipient from forwarding the email.

Instructions (For Outlook Web Application [OWA] or Outlook New)

Start by creating a new email and selecting the "Options" tab in the ribbon, then the lock icon to select an encryption option:
