Objects/images "disappear" when placed in-line, but appear fine in front of text in Microsoft Word

Solution 1: Check document content options

The most common cause is the "Show picture placeholders" option being enabled, which shows an empty box instead of the image to speed up scrolling in image-heavy documents.
For Word 2010 or later:
  1. Go to the File tab, and then click Options.
  2. In the Word Options window, select the Advanced category.
  3. Scroll down to the Show document content section.
  4. Make sure the box next to Show picture placeholders is unchecked.
  5. Check the box next to Show drawings and text boxes on screen to ensure all graphic objects are displayed.
  6. Click OK.
Solution 2: Fix paragraph line spacing
If the paragraph containing your inline image has its line spacing set to an exact value, the image may be too tall to fit and will be cut off or hidden.
  1. Place your cursor in the paragraph where the image should appear.
  2. Go to the Home tab and click the dialog box launcher (the small arrow) in the bottom-right corner of the Paragraph group.
  3. In the Indents and Spacing tab, change the Line spacing option from Exactly to Single, Multiple, or At least.
  4. Click OK.
Solution 3: Change your document view
Certain document views, like Draft and Outline, intentionally hide images to focus on text. If you are in one of these views, switch to Print Layout to see all graphic elements.
  1. Click the View tab in the ribbon.
  2. In the Views group on the left, click Print Layout.
Solution 4: Disable hardware graphics acceleration
In rare cases, a conflict with your computer's graphics drivers can cause display issues. You can disable hardware acceleration to troubleshoot this possibility.
  1. Go to the File tab, and then click Options.
  2. Select the Advanced category.
  3. Scroll to the Display section.
  4. Check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
  5. Click OK and restart Word.
